NGC 253 – The Sculptor Galaxy (A Starburst Behind the Dust)

About 11.4 million light-years away in the constellation Sculptor, NGC 253, also known as the Sculptor Galaxy, is one of the brightest and most active spiral galaxies in the southern sky.
Seen nearly edge-on, its disk is crossed by intricate lanes of interstellar dust, while bluish regions trace young, massive stars and active stellar nurseries. Its central regions contain large reservoirs of molecular gas that fuel an intense episode of star formation, making NGC 253 one of the nearest and best-studied examples of a starburst galaxy.
Much of this activity is partly hidden by dust and becomes especially prominent at infrared, radio and X-ray wavelengths. Energy released by massive stars and numerous supernova explosions also drives a powerful galactic superwind, carrying hot gas and enriched material thousands of light-years above and below the galactic disk.
Spanning roughly 90,000 light-years, NGC 253 is only slightly smaller than our Milky Way. Its apparently delicate glow therefore hides a remarkably energetic environment, where stars are being born, massive stars are dying, and matter is continuously recycled into the galaxy and its surrounding halo.
