This wide-field image reveals the Rho Ophiuchi Molecular Cloud Complex, one of the closest star-forming regions to the Solar System, located toward the constellations of Ophiuchus and Scorpius.
The extensive dark lanes crossing the field are formed by dense concentrations of molecular gas and interstellar dust, which absorb the light from background stars. In contrast, the bluish regions are reflection nebulae, where tiny dust grains scatter the blue light emitted by nearby stars more efficiently.
On the right, the region illuminated by Antares stands out. This red supergiant star gives the surrounding dust its yellow and orange hues. Near the upper part of the image, Messier 4, one of the closest globular clusters to Earth, can also be seen.
The diversity of colors is not merely a visual effect: it reveals different interactions between stellar radiation, gas, and dust. Through spectroscopy, this light can be separated into its individual wavelengths, allowing astronomers to investigate properties such as chemical composition, temperature, density, and the motion of the interstellar material, thereby deepening our understanding of star formation and stellar evolution.
The image was captured in Sanharó, Pernambuco, Brazil, under Bortle 5 skies, using 344 exposures of 60 seconds each, for a total integration time of 5 hours and 44 minutes.
Technical details: Touptek ATR533C camera; Rokinon 135mm f/2.0 ED UMC lens used at f/2.8; SVBONY 2-inch UV/IR Cut filter; Sky-Watcher EQ5 mount with SynScan GoTo, operating unguided. Acquisition was performed with SharpCap Pro, and processing was completed in PixInsight and Affinity Photo.
