NGC 1097 – A Grand Barred Spiral Galaxy

NGC 1097 is a beautiful barred spiral galaxy, best known for its strange, faint “jets” of light. These lines are the leftover stars from a small galaxy that NGC 1097 pulled apart long ago, leaving behind ghost-like trails.
NGC 1097 also has a small companion galaxy that’s being stretched and distorted by NGC 1097’s gravity, showing that this galaxy is still actively shaping its neighborhood.
