A rose for Valentine

Valentine’s day is around the corner and a cosmic rose from space greets the viewer in rich tones of gold, green and blue. The Rosette nebula is a popular target for astrophotographers as it is large and bright, and fits into the field of view of most widefield telescopes. Imaged here in narrowband filters of Sulphur, Hydrogen and Oxygen one can view the various gases along with opaque towers of dust which rise from the billowing clouds around its core. At its core also lies a star cluster designated NGC 2244, an open cluster of hot massive stars which also illuminate the nebula….
