NGC 986

Sometimes I wish I had a 1 meter scope for that extra reach into smaller galaxies. But then, a wider field of view puts the galaxy into context and the line-up of bright stars and smaller galaxies around NGC 986, does add to the mystique in some way!!

Found in the constellation of Fornax, NGC 986 is a barred galaxy sitting around 56 million light-years away from us. With its central bar-shaped structure and S-shaped swirling arms, NGC 986 has the characteristic morphology of barred galaxies. Young blue stars can be seen dotted amongst the galaxy’s arms and the core of the galaxy shines bright with star formation.
