IC 2872, also known as Gum 40, is an emission nebula located in the constellation Centaurus, approximately 6,500 light-years from Earth. It is part of the Running Chicken Nebula complex, representing the “head” of the chicken. The nebula displays three bright lobes, possibly separated by dust lanes, similar to the Trifid Nebula. Due to its position south of the celestial equator, IC 2872 is more easily observable from the Southern Hemisphere.
