The Lagoon Nebula (also known as M 8, or NGC 6523) is a diffuse nebula visible in the constellation Sagittarius.
The Lagoon Nebula belongs to the arm of the galactic spiral immediately more internal than ours, the Arm of Sagittarius; it is about 4100 light-years from Earth and is home to some interesting astronomical objects and phenomena, such as open clusters (see NGC 6530), star-forming regions, dark nebulae, young stars, hot gases.
Inside there are several Bok globules, i.e. clouds of collapsed protostellar material.
The Trifid Nebula (also known as M 20, or NGC 6514) is an emission nebula and H II region located in the constellation Sagittarius. The Trifid Nebula is about 5,000 light-years from Earth, thus finding itself in the Sagittarius Arm. The stars that excite its gas are blue giants, about 7 million years old; the various colors are given by the different elements: red is typical of hydrogen, while blue is typical of oxygen. The dark bands, on the other hand, are dust and cold, unilluminated gases.
