NGC 4631 (also known as C 32 or by the nickname Whale Galaxy) is a large spiral galaxy in the constellation of Hunting Dogs
It is one of the largest and closest oriented profile spirals known: its distance from the Milky Way is estimated to be around 12 million light-years, making it one of the closest giant spirals to our Local Group.
NGC 4631 gives its name to the Group of NGC 4631, a group of galaxies which includes, among others, its companion dwarf elliptical galaxy NGC 4627 and the interacting galaxies NGC 4656 and NGC 4657
NGC 4656 (also known as the Hockey Bat Galaxy) is an irregular spiral galaxy in the constellation of Hunting Dogs. Its distance from the Milky Way is estimated to be around 10 million light-years; it is part, together with the galaxy NGC 4631, of a “Local Group” similar to ours, as well as one of the closest.
