The Medusa Nebula, also known as Abell 21 and Sharpless 274, is a large planetary nebula located in the constellation Gemini, near the border with the constellation Little Dog. It was discovered in 1955 by George Abell. It owes its name to the luminous gas filaments, which recall the “hair” of Medusa in Greek mythology.
It was believed that this nebula is a supernova aftermath until the early 1970s. In 1971, Soviet astronomers determined that it is actually a planetary nebula
